"Kagan Admits Authorship of ACOG Memo; More Questions Expected

Under questioning from Sen. Orrin Hatch – the first Republican to ask her about the American College Of Obstetricians And Gynecologists partial-birth abortion memo – Elena Kagan admitted her authorship of the memo." Human Events blog, 6/30/10

This type of behavior is why I stopped practicing law. Here we have an attorney who persuaded a group to present a false statement to a court of law. This is behavior which is subject to attorney discipline, and, considering the import of the case(s) in which this false statement was presented, potentially disbarment.

What did Kagen do? Simple. She was presented with a report which had the following language:

"[A] select panel convened by ACOG could identify no circumstances under which this procedure [intact D&X abortion], as defined above, would be the only option to save the life or preserve the health of the woman.” (Good review here, with links to the full documents in PDF format.)

At the time, Kagan was a political hack in the employ of the Clinton Administration. She knew the above language was "disastrous" to any attempt to overturn the federal ban on partial birth abortions -- a Clinton goal.

But, she also knew that the report by the supposedly non-partisan ACOG would be presented to a federal judge who would review it as evidence and give it at least some weight.

So, what did she do? She asked ACOG to change its conclusion. Not change its language. She asked ACOG to delete the disastrous language and substitute the following:

“An intact D+X, [partial-birth abortion] however, may be the best or most appropriate procedure in a particular circumstance to save the life or preserve the health of a woman, and a doctor should be allowed to make this determination." id.

This isn't a change of "wording," it is a change, in the opposite direction, of meaning. It isn't what ACOG said in its original report; it is essentially the opposite. ACOG could not believe both statements to be true.

Nonetheless, ACOG complied with the request and the altered report was presented to several federal judges and was accepted by them as evidence which was relied upon at least to some degree in making their judgments. (ACOG's role in this fraud is despicable and far reaching, including, apparently, making the assertion that they had not had contact with anyone concerning their report when, in fact, they had met with the Clinton administration (including Kagan) earlier and had (at least) the conversations with Kagan as related herein. But, ACOG ain't up for SCOTUS...)

Her actions (and the actions of the other lawyers complicit in this fraud) violate the Professional Rules of Responsibility on many levels:

"Rule 3.4: Fairness to opposing party and counsel

A lawyer shall not:

(a) unlawfully obstruct another party' s access to evidence or unlawfully alter, destroy or conceal a document or other material having potential evidentiary value. A lawyer shall not counsel or assist another person to do any such act;

(b) falsify evidence, counsel or assist a witness to testify falsely, or offer an inducement to a witness that is prohibited by law; ... "

"Rule 8.4: Maintaining the Integrity of the Profession; Misconduct

It is professional misconduct for a lawyer to:

(a) violate or attempt to violate the Rules of Professional Conduct, knowingly assist or induce another to do so, or do so through the acts of another;

(b) ...

(c) engage in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation;

(d) engage in conduct that is prejudicial to the administration of justice;

..."

This is reprehensible behavior for any lawyer. It is even worse when that lawyer is a "public servant" on the public payroll advising the President of the United States, and especially reprehensible when the intent is to affect public policy through the employment of fraudulent documents.

It is unfortunate, but such behavior is common amongst attorneys. That doesn't mean, however, that when it is rooted out, it should be ignored -- especially when it is perpetrated by a potential Supreme Court Justice!

Someone should immediately file a disciplinary complaint against her. She should be chastised, disciplined and, potentially, disbarred.

Unfortunately, it is more likely that this political hack who is willing to perpetrate fraud on the Judicial System will soon be writing opinions from the highest bench.

Incompetence in the Gulf? Depends on what "is" is...

The lame stream media is finally beginning to hammer Obama. Even the most left-wing of sycophants have taken to questioning Obama's competence.

Amazing.

Amazing on several levels. Wrong, however, I think, on all.

The right blogosphere is all atwitter with cries of "Gotcha!" Right wing pundits engage in volleys of "Told ya so!" directed towards the left and the traitorous right (Noonan and fellow travelers). They were warned that Obama's lack of executive experience was inviting disaster -- and that lack of experience has now (again) resulted in unmitigated disaster in the Gulf.

Could be. Could be.

But, what if it's not? What if his mis-steps in Israel, his bowing to foreign leaders, his betrayal of allies, his disrespect of the U.K., his insane over-printing of currency, his attitude towards events in Iran (now and the "uprising"), his abandonment of Israel, his failure to address North Korea, etc. etc. etc. aren't acts of incompetence but, instead, purposeful?

How stupid do we believe him to be?

Assuredly, he can read a poll. Or several polls. Or every poll. He can see what effect his actions are having on the chances his party will retain power in 2010. No matter how "teleprompter dependent" he might be, no sane person can think that he doesn't see what's happening. And has been happening since before the "health-care" debate became so inflamed against him and the Democratic party.

Certainly, he could see what his inaction in the Gulf (and his actions which were contrary to actually cleaning up the mess) was doing to his, and his party's, chances in 2010.

Again, just how stupid do we believe him to be?

Me? I think that most of the pundits simply read Obama wrong. They think he's a politician, a run-of-the-mill (albeit a Chicago) politician.

If viewed as such, then, of course, many of his actions, destructive not only of the potential continued supremacy of his Party but of his own re-election in 2012, are either the result of insanity or of incompetence.

But, if viewed, instead, through the eyes of a true believer who cares only about his agenda -- and nothing and no one else -- then, events take on a whole other meaning, don't they?

He wanted Health Care. He got Health Care. He may have lost the House and perhaps the Senate in the process, but he got Health Care. The camel's hump is under the tent.

He got Cap & Trade through the House. It stalled in the Senate. The oil spill presents new opportunity to push it through. But, not if it is stoppered quickly and cleaned up with little damage. So, it isn't stoppered quickly and the clean up is stymied at every turn. And, he pushes his Green agenda -- including Cap & Trade.

So, are his actions here (and elsewhere/when) "incompetent?" Or, is he simply uncaring about everyone/everything else other than his AGENDA?

Personally, I don't think he's stupid. Nor, do I think he's utterly incompetent. I simply believe that he doesn't care whether the Democrats retain the House or that he be re-elected. These would be nice, but the agenda is all.

Health Care has been passed. It is highly unlikely that it will be fully repealed. And, if it isn't fully repealed, it, like every other government program, will grow. The same with Cap & Trade, if it gets passed -- in any form.

When it is your goal to "transform America," you must be willing to make sacrifices. Of anyone and of anything -- except your agenda.

Almost a year...

But, in reality, I've been lazy. It's work to create posts which are (or are intended to be) entertaining and informative while not just parroting what others elsewhere do better.

Democrats Begin "Pushback" -- Time to Buckle In

The Democrats have begun their "pushback."

Following the instructions of their Great Leader (here) the Democrats are doing everything they can to shut up anyone opposed to Obamacare.

Obama clearly tells his opponents to "Shut up!":

They are lying, instructing their minions to send out false letters to their Representatives. (here)

Using their willing accomplices in the MSM, they are promoting false stories of "astroturfed" town hall protests. (here)

Obama is drumming up support -- the ultimate "top-down" astroturfing. (here)

The Democrat Party is mobilizing its union thugs to silence the voices at town halls which even question Obamacare. HCAN (Health Care for America Now) sent detailed instructions to its union members to help them silence the opposition. HCAN's membership includes: ACORN, AFL-CIO, SEIU, NEA, and La Raza. (here)

Representatives who don't want to face those they represent and answer their questions are packing their "town halls" with these hired thugs, bussed in from out of state. (here)

Unions, those respecters of individual rights and freedoms, do what unions do -- they begin using violence to snuff out dissent.

Buckle in -- it's going to be a bumpy ride.

What Cash for Clunkers Teaches Us About Health Care

When something is "free," people will snap it up.

It's really that simple. When someone gets something for nothing, they tend to snatch up as much of that something as they can. In this case, they got $4,500.00 off the purchase price of their new car, not including any further discount offered by the dealers. (I've seen ads where the dealers offer up to an additional $4,500.00. $9,000.00 off the price of a new car is a pretty big discount.)

So, predictably, people have been rushing out to avail themselves of this hand-out.

Translate that into health care.

Have you been putting off going to the doctor for nagging problems because you have a high deductible on your insurance policy? Perhaps your co-pay is high? Maybe your coverage only pays 80% and you have to pay the other 20%? Maybe you don't have insurance at all and you have to wait in the emergency room for whatever care you receive?

What if it was all free?

Dick Morris opines that the question to ask your legislators is "How can you cover 50 million more people without increasing the number of doctors?"

He misses the point.

No one in America (including illegal aliens) is denied access to medical care in America. Everyone has access. Those with high deductibles, large co-pays, or no insurance at all may not be availing themselves of it, but that isn't because it isn't there. It's just too expensive or too inconvenient to access for every minor inconvenience.

That wouldn't be true if universal health care were passed. Everyone would be able to make an appointment to be seen in a doctor's office (as opposed to being forced to wait in the emergency room for your child's cold) -- regardless of how minor the ailment (or perceived ailment) actually is.

So, what would happen?

Well, they'd make those appointments, wouldn't they?

Now, where are we going to get all the doctors to see all these patients who, if they had to pay for the service out of their pocket (or inconvenience themselves by a long wait in the emergency room) would not be seeking that service?

The medical providers would be deluged with demands on their services that would overwhelm them -- and overwhelm the treasury.

Just like Cash for Clunkers.

It's predictable. It's inevitable.

It's human nature.

Abortion -- The Right Answer

Contrary to those who live in the fuzzy logic of the gray, there are some life questions which demand a "right" and "wrong" answer. Whether to support or to oppose abortion is one of these questions.

And, contrary to Justice Blackmun's refusal to "resolve the difficult question of when life begins" each of us must, individually, resolve that very question. Indeed, it is the only question which needs resolution as every other question involved in the abortion controversy logically flows from its resolution.

We know that human beings give birth to human beings (and "persons" within the meaning of the 14th Amendment). A belief in any other reality is insanity.

It, therefore, follows that a pregnant human female has in her womb either that which is a human being or that which will become a human being. There are no other available choices.

Thus, when confronted with the choice whether to support or to oppose abortion, a moral person must first answer for himself whether that which would be killed is or is not a human being.

The failure to directly confront this question is the act of a moral coward.

There are three choices: 1) The unborn child is a human being; 2) The unborn child is not a human being; and 3) We don't know whether it is or it is not.

The first two choices require proof. Unfortunately, there is no definitive proof as to when a human being becomes a human being -- except at the moment of birth.

So, we don't know. It's "above our pay grade."

Therefore, if you support abortion, you support killing what might be human beings. (This is akin to a hunter shooting at a rustle in the bushes -- uncaring whether what he shoots at is a person or a deer. He doesn't know, and he doesn't care.) If you oppose abortion, then you oppose killing what might be human beings.

Of these two positions, only one has any moral authority and is the right answer.

Right now, I'm concentrating on Books (Used) and Magic, the Gathering cards. I think that getting it stocked with those two areas will eat up much of the rest of the year. After that, I'll start in on Comic Books.

Canaries in the Mineshaft

Miners long ago learned the usefulness of canaries. By keeling over, those hapless caged birds would warn miners of toxic gasses or of too little oxygen before humans could detect (or be harmed by) their presence or lack.

In politics, canaries abound. No matter what political action is pursued, there are some who attempt to warn against it, some who "squawk" their warnings to all. It doesn't matter what political objective is pursued, there are some who attempt to warn the rest of us that the proposed governmental action is detrimental to the nation.

But, political animals are particular beasts -- they only hear the squawking of like-minded canaries and are genetically incapable of hearing the warnings of any canary who isn't politically in tune with them. Thus, it isn't until liberals begin to hear the squawks of liberal canaries that their ears perk up and they begin to take notice, if not heed, of the warnings. (Of course, the same is true of conservatives and conservative canaries. This makes perfect sense as that which is deadly to a conservative is the natural environment of liberals and vice versa...)

Some liberals are squawking, signaling to the rest of the more politically obtuse liberals that the Obama mineshaft is entering territory which may be deadly to liberals.

Robert Byrd, that self-styled defender of the U.S. Constitution, squawks of the dangers Obama's many Czars pose to that beloved document.

When they saw the price tag individual states would have to pay when the federal government stopped paying the bill for the expanded Medicaid under Obama's health care plan, Governors Phil Bredesen of Tennessee, Christine Gregoire of Washington, and Bill Richardson of New Mexico (Liberals all) squawked their shrill cries of warning, perhaps understanding for the first time the dangers of unfunded mandates.

Forty-four liberal canaries squawked (albeit faintly and safely) about cap and tax. Eight Republicans decided that the air in the liberal mineshaft was more to their liking. It remains to be seen whether they will survive their choice.

Mrs. Boxer (who, according to her, is and should be called "Senator" if you happen to be in the military) accidentally became a canary while questioning a witness. Seeing that the witness was black, she mistook the air they shared to be liberal air and sucked in several lungfuls of conservative air. It is likely that she will survive this mistake if she is able to make it back to her natural habitat where the rarified liberal air is likely to revive her.

Even Congressman Grayson, a particularly liberal liberal, is squawking, wanting to know where the money went.

Now, admittedly, these are slight warning to committed liberals, but the number and intensity of warnings is growing. And, while the political class can almost always survive in an environment which would render the ordinary human senseless, the warnings seem to have been sufficient to steer some liberals away from the mineshaft Obama is intent upon leading them into.

Palin Resigns! Pundits Ponder Purpose.

Sarah Palin resigned today, delivering what appeared to be a noteless and impassioned speech in which she outlined her reasons.

Pundits did what pundits always do -- viewed it through the prism of their own political minds.

They ask: "Political suicide or brilliant move?" or "What could her "real" reason be?" or "How does this affect her chance at a 2012 Presidential run?"

These questions are useful when asked about the motivations of a politician. You can never believe what a politician says, as, of course, they're politicians and lie for a living.

Sarah Palin is not a politician. She never has been.

Sarah Palin entered politics to effect change. And, until she wandered into the arena of national politics, she was doing just that.

But, ever since she dared to be a strong, competent woman who didn't toe the NOW line, she has been subjected to attack after attack -- the "politics of personal destruction" on a scale I haven't seen of any other national figure.

Not John Edwards. Not Barney Frank. Not Chris Dodd. NO other political figure -- not those who took bribes, not those under criminal indictment, not those behind bars -- has been under such unrelenting attack as had Sarah Palin.

So, Sarah Palin resigned. She told us why she resigned.

Yet the pundits continue to probe, continue to try to impose their world-view upon her -- even though the former governor has established beyond all doubt that she does not share their world-view.

Sarah Palin told us why she resigned. She resigned because she can't do her job. Most of her time is spent defending herself from frivolous ethics charges (15 currently investigated and dismissed) which eat her time and Alaskan taxpayers' money (over two million thus far).

That isn't what the people of Alaska hired her to do. They hired her to govern -- not to spend all of her time defending herself.

There is no further political calculation beyond this simple one. She, in good conscience, can't continue to be a part-time governor when the people of Alaska deserve a full-time one.

Further, she believes that she will be able to pursue the greater good by bringing her message conservatism to the rest of the country, unencumbered by the duties of office.

She told us this.

Why do the pundits not believe her?

They seem to believe politicians such as Obama when all evidence is that he simply cannot be believed but try to ferret out hidden meaning from Palin when all evidence shows that she speaks plainly.

Pundits.

I have long believed that there was something in the body which "told" it when it was time to start dying. An old study with the pituitary glands of mice which increased the average life-span made me think that maybe it was hormone induced.

But, whatever the reason, I believe that, if you're under the age of 30 or so today, there's a significant likelihood that you'll never die -- of old age anyway (and if you're in a Western society).

I saw this today.

Interesting.

Immortality. Ennui. Zelazny.

Say It Ain't Sosa!

The NYT reports that Sammy Sosa tested positive for a banned substance (which is not reported) in 2003, one of the 104 positive results which resulted in the current MLB stringent testing rules.

We now know two of those 104 -- Sammy Sosa and Alex Rodriguez. Who are the remaining 102? We don't yet know, but, I'm fairly certain that other "big names" will slowly leak out.

Anyone surprised?

Anyone?

Nah.

What does this do to the Hall of Fame prospects of not only Sammy Sosa but of anyone in the "Steroid Era?"

It's hard to tell at this point. Mark McGwire has received less than 25% of the required 75% of Hall of Fame voters in each of his three years of eligibility. And, there's no "smoking gun" in McGwire's case, just what we saw on the field and his refusal to answer questions about his drug use when testifying in front of Congress.

Ivan Rodriguez will soon pass Carlton Fisk for most games by a catcher, probably today. He's won ten golden gloves. He, Bench, and Berra are said to have the best arms behind the plate in the history of the game. He has a .300 lifetime batting average with 300 home runs. He was the AL MVP in 1999. Offensively and defensively, he clearly is one of the top five catchers of all time. Yet, he likely won't go into the Hall of Fame.

Why?

Because he was named in Jose Canseco's book.

That's all. And, apparently, in this steroid era, it's enough.

But...

What if most of the current crop of potential Hall of Famers ultimately are found on that list of those 104 who tested positive in 2003?

What do we do then?

The Hall of Fame is supposed to enshrine the most dominant players of a particular era. If all or most of the players in a particular era were "juiced up," then we will have only two choices: 1) Just black out the past 20 years or so and not enshrine anyone; or 2) Compare like to like and enshrine the best of the era regardless of whether they used drugs to enhance their performance or not (with a sad nod to those who played by the rules and came up just a bit short...).

I think that we should just assume that Canseco was right and accept that the vast majority of major league baseball players were "juiced" and simply enshrine the best of this era, but with an asterisk.

The Health Care Debate. Do we need more socialized medicine?

I have mixed feelings about this issue.

We have a screwed up system.

For example, I pay around five grand a year for my health care insurance. Just mine. In order to keep my premiums down (!), I have to have a very high deductible -- fifteen hundred bucks.

This results in me essentially not having insurance for anything other than major medical disasters since I'm going to have to go out of pocket for anything which isn't a serious medical problem, and if I have a serious medical problem, I would be able to receive medical care for it whether or not I had insurance.

Huh.

And, in the event that I had a major medical disaster, having insurance isn't going to prevent the inevitable financial disaster, since, like most, I don't have any "nest-egg" to pay my other bills while I'm in the hospital or rendered incapable of working. (Of course, if I didn't have to pay five grand a year, perhaps I could have, over the past several decades of paying that sum, I could have saved enough to tide me over, but, then I wouldn't have insurance and the medical disaster would kill me financially.)

So, in the event of a major medical disaster, I'm pretty well financially doomed with or without insurance.

Huh.

Private insurance spreads risk. People like me who never make claims but pay premiums pay for those who make claims. Private insurance companies (in general) make their profits by taking in more in premiums than they pay out in claims. This provides incentive to delay or deny claims which are properly promptly paid. (Anyone who has had to fight with their insurance company over whether or how much to pay on a claim is familiar with this truth.)

Public insurance doesn't spread risk. Public insurance has a budget. Public insurance, accordingly, rations care. It is the inevitable outgrowth of having a limited budget.

So, no matter if you have insurance or if you're on public insurance (such as Medicaid), you're at the mercy of your insurance provider as to when or whether your particular medical needs will be paid for from a source other than out of your pocket. In the end, both are run by accountants.

Huh.

We all know (or should know) that the government doesn't do anything especially well. Trusting our medical care (a.k.a. our lives and the lives of our loved ones) to the government seems a chancy choice. But, we know that the government will be there tomorrow. (And, if it's not, our medical care is the least of our worries...)

We all know (or should know) that competition between private enterprises results in lowered costs and better service. Of course, it also results in extinction of those who cannot compete or who make bad business decisions. (Ask A.I.G.) We can wake up tomorrow in the hospital staring at an unpaid hospital bill because our former insurance carrier no longer exists.

Huh.

In the end, I have to come down (marginally) on the side of private medical insurance with the "safety net" of public insurance for those who cannot afford private medical insurance -- essentially what we have now.

What "tips" it for me is this: when the bean-counters count their beans and ration care in a public insurance model, they tend to concentrate on rationing (or eliminating) the most expensive care for those who will, if they receive the care, least benefit from it, i.e., those in the last six months of their lives. Further, those bean-counters will ration testing, since much testing results in no medical benefit other than ruling out medical conditions. (Pittsburgh has more MRI machines than exist in the entire country of Canada for example.) Public insurance isn't a fan of "experimental" medical procedures or medicine.

Private insurance companies don't like to pay for testing any more than the government, but, unlike the government, they can be sued in an effort to force them to adhere to the terms of the insurance contract. Private insurers can be forced to pay the huge costs associated with a person in the final stages of their lives -- the government can't. Whether a medical procedure or drug is "experimental" can be decided by a judge or jury rather than a bureaucrat.

So, what tips things for me?

Lawyers.

Phil Jackson -- Greatest Basketball Coach of All Time?

This is a tough question. By the objective standard of playoff appearances, playoff wins, playoff win percentages, and Titles, it would seem a no-brainer.

So, why the question?

Because of who he coached, of course. He won six with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pipen, the greatest player of all time (according to most) and one of the top 50 greatest players of all time.

He won three with Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, two of the top 50 greatest players of all time.

He won this last one with Kobe Bryant, but didn't win it until he had assembled a team with one of the best centers in the game (Pau Gasol) and a 6th man forward who would be a starter on any other team (Lamar Odom).

But, the same is true of Red Auerbach. He had more than his share of top 50 all-time players (Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, Sam Jones.)

The same is true of Pat Riley and his six rings. He had Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and James Worthy.

Seems it's hard to be in the discussion for "best coach of all time" without having a fistful of "best players of all time," doesn't it?

In fact, a review of the rosters of the Finals winners over the history of the NBA is almost a recitation of the names of the top 50 players of all time. And, when multiple titles are won, you see multiple players who are in the top 50 players of all time (and/or ones who are certainly the best of their era).

Deeper review shows that winners of the NBA finals are almost entirely teams with a dominant big man -- one of the top 50 players of all time -- Bill Russell, Bill Walton, Shaquille O'Neal, Wilt Chamberlain, Robert Parish, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon, Tim Duncan, and George Mikan.

This theme, multiple titles won by a coach with a handful of all-time greats along with a dominant big man, is quite consistent throughout NBA history.

Except for Phil Jackson's SIX without a memorable big man.

Red had Russell. Riley had Jabbar. Phil had Horace Grant and Luc Longley.

Each had fistfuls of all-time greats (two or more) on their teams. But ONLY Phil was able to win multiple titles (six) WITHOUT a dominant big man.

For me, that settles the question.

Obama's (Latest) Foreign Policy Failure

It just doesn't seem like the brightest move to deposit four people allegedly trained by the Taliban or Al Qaeda in a dependency of the U.K. (Bermuda) without, you know, letting them know.

Maybe the Queen can find the reason in one of Obama's speeches in her redundant I-Pod.

Can Sarah Palin save the GOP?

Yes.

Do you remember the first time you heard Sarah Palin speak? How it made you feel?

I do. Electrified. Spellbound. Hanging on every word, every syllable, wondering "Who in the hell is this sudden star?" I immediately took a liking to this new voice.

Then began the relentless, vicious attacks from the left, the condescension of the right's intelligentsia (the Parkers and Wills). They attempted to diminish her, to marginalize her. And, to an extent, they succeeded. But, even with that constant barrage of undeserved attacks from all sides, the faithful flocked to hear her, this new voice that sounded so much like themselves coming from a woman whose life's experiences so resembled their own.

The faithful recognized one of their own. They sensed the genuineness of Sarah Palin.

She didn't just say what people wanted to hear; she said what she wanted to say. She, as governor, didn't do just what people wanted her to do; she did what she was compelled by her fundamental beliefs to do. In the common parlance, she "walked the walk."

Some "conservatives," especially the beltway intelligentsia, decided to essentially ignore Sarah Palin's history of accomplishment in favor of remarking disparagingly about the way she speaks which is, at times, scattershot to the point of being almost unintelligible.

But, even in those moments of meandering mazes of half-finished sentences, for the faithful, there isn't any question as to what Sarah Palin believes -- just a desire that she could articulate it better.

For them, and for me, a President we know to be a conservative is far superior to one who is merely talks like one.

As this remarkable woman becomes more comfortable in her fresh national skin, she will develop the skills necessary to better articulate her positions, positions informed by her fundamental beliefs, and like Reagan, her essential likeability will come through and more people will find themselves willing to listen to her ideas with more open minds. When this happens, those other Republican Presidential hopefuls who are more informed by polls than beliefs will find themselves jockeying for position as her Vice Presidential nominee.

The GOP needs desperately an unifying voice, a voice around which the party faithful can rally. There simply isn't any other voice in the GOP which engenders such support -- support springing almost as much from the belief in her as the ideas she champions.

This is called "trust." The faithful believes in Sarah Palin as we do no other "politician" in the Republican party. We believe that she believes in the ideas and values she champions, ideas and values that we believe in. As importantly, we believe that, if elected, she'll actually do what she says that she will.

That is a powerful combination of forces.

Perhaps powerful enough to save the fractured GOP.

Shaq going to Cleveland? LeBron said to be in tears.

Tears of joy, of anticipation, that is.

Shaquille O'Neal looked great last year, having his best year since leaving Miami and Dwayne Wade. He has a couple of good years left in him where he can be one of the top two or three dominant big men in the game.

LeBron James is, without question, one of the top three players in the game today. (Kobe Bryant and Dwayne Wade being the other two, if you were confused...)

With Shaquille O'Neal, LeBron James has a big man to play the game as LeBron James is built to play it -- inside out and outside in -- and a big man who is both willing and able to fulfill his role at the highest level. (Shaquille O'Neal is one of the best passing big men in the game.)

Will the trade go through? I think so. Phoenix needs the cap room and Shaquille O'Neal never really fit into the gesalt of the Suns to begin with. And, if Cleveland wants LeBron James to be a Cleveland Cavalier after next year when his contract runs out, they must win NOW. Lebron wants it; Shaq wants it; the Suns need the cap room; Cleveland needs a dominant inside force.

All the stars are aligned -- full speed ahead!

Today, I posted around 80 items, all baseball cards. This batch included some 1959 and 1960 Topps (mostly commons of St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Philadelphia Phillies). I posted some 1977 star cards (Joe Morgan, Steve Garvey, Fergie Jenkins, Jim Rice, Willie McCovey). I also posted a small selection of Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Chipper Jones, Roger Clemens, Ken Griffey, Jr., and Tony Gwynn inserts along with two factory sets of 2006 Topps.

Leave Brett Favre Alone!

I keep hearing the pundits on television and on the radio giving poor Brett Favre a hard time for his seeming indecision about whether or not he is going to play for the Vikings this year. Some give him a hard time based on his timing of his surgery, alleging that he is trying to escape mandatory work-outs. Others slam him for being a prima donna. Some slam him because they think that his sole reason for even wanting to play for the Vikings is so that he can get "revenge" on Green Bay twice a year.

They're all wrong.

First, we have to look at the timing. He wasn't released from the Jets until April 28th. Prior to his release, he simply wasn't free to even communicate with the Vikings. He told us last year that he wouldn't ask for his release from the Jets. He didn't. They released him gratis.

So, it hasn't been even two months since Favre could seek other teams upon which to play.

Second, we have to consider what happened last year -- from Brett's perspective. He had a hell of a good season until he got injured. He hadn't been released by the Jets, so he had no reason to undergo surgery to repair the injury. The injury is one which might "repair" itself through use or might not (a partially torn right (throwing arm) bicep tendon). A little more than two weeks after his release, after the Vikings expressed interest, Brett consulted renowned sports surgeon, Dr. James Andrews. A little more than two weeks later, he had the surgery.

So, Brett, who had an amazing first 11 games of last season and 5 terrible games to end the season, doesn't yet know whether or not he's physically capable of playing the position.

Third, we have to look at things from the Vikings perspective. They don't know whether or not Brett Favre is the Brett Favre of last season's first 11 games or last 5.

So, what do we have? A prima donna who is milking his time in the spotlight? A Hall of Famer who put off his surgery just to avoid training camp?

No.

What we have is a quarterback who thinks he can still play at the highest level -- if he's healthy -- but doesn't know if he's healthy. We have a Super Bowl caliber team lacking a Super Bowl caliber quarterback who thinks that Brett Favre can be that quarterback -- if he's healthy -- but doesn't know if he's healthy.

So, both are in the process of finding out to their individual satisfaction whether he is healthy, and if so, can he play at the level that can get the Vikings over the hump.

So...Leave Brett Favre alone!
